Biggest TTM I've Ever received...

...And I'll tell you about it later. Unfortunately, I'm on my way to a meeting.

I just enjoy being a tease. Bahahaha

Quickie! (Pull Your Mind From The Gutter!!!)

Just a quick post today - the weather is finally nice and I don't want to be inside all day!

First, if you are collecting 2014 Topps Series 1 but you don't plan on putting together the Power Players insert set, SEND THEM TO ME. I am trying to put together the entire set (110 cards from S1, 110 cards from S2). If I can do it, I will be eligible to win a special autographed set. If I win that set, I will give away some cards from it to someone that helped me! So send them my way (with the code unused!)!

Second, I received a sweet package from Chris at Condition Sensitive earlier in the week. He sent me some awesome stuff:

For my Nelson Cruz PC, this awesome Pink Parallel from the base set, and the base Chrome card, which I didn't have a spare for my PC. Both Needed and very much appreciated!

A Harper Xfractor for my PC. Nice!

LAstly, a base auto of Darin Ruf. I know, you're probably thinking, "Judson, you aren't a Phillies collector. What gives?" Well, Ruf and I went to school together at Creighton (along with Yankees ambidextrous pitcher Pat Venditte). So I was pretty stoked to finally pick up one of his autos.

Thanks Chris!

Sometimes, I Don't Know What To Say

Occasionally, Blogger decides that it doesn't want to share all of the posts that should appear in my feed. This leads to me missing an awesome card that someone pulled, trade bait being offered up that I would love to have or just an overall awesome post that would have made my day better just by reading.

Earlier today, I clicked on the latest post from Mark's Ephemera in which he shares his gratitude for making Night Owl's Top 12 "always read to the bottom" blogs.

He was also grateful for being nominated for Best Blogger at it's like having my own Card Shop. In giving thanks, he also mentions a few new blogs that he is following because of the nomination. He mentioned my blog, which, unbeknownst to me, had been nominated at Dan's blog for Best New Blog.

I'm truly speechless.

I never saw the posts by Dan because Blogger evidently thought I shouldn't see them. Evidently, Blogger isn't as big of a fan of my blog as some of you are.

Dan, I truly appreciate the honor of being nominated. To whoever nominated me...I'll spot you $50 when I find out who you are!

In all seriousness, I am truly honored and appreciative of the nomination. When I started this blog, I didn't think anyone would read. I did it more for me to have an outlet to write - I have two degrees in journalism and mass communication that I don't use professionally, so I need to keep my skills sharp. The fact that people not only read it but like it is....well, it's beyond me. So, thank you to everyone who has ever read My Cardboard Habit.

And thanks to Mark for giving me a bit of time on his blog and for letting me know I was up for an award! I owe you!

The Best Hobby Box I Ever Opened...Followed By One Of The Worst

Yesterday, I stopped by my LCS to blow off steam (it was a very long day at work). I'm almost finished with my 2014 Topps S1 set, but I decided to buy a hobby box for shits and giggles (pardon the language).

Turned out to be the best hobby box I ever opened.

I'll get right to the hits. The very first pack offered up this beauty:

Enny Romero clear parallel numbered 1 of 10! I told Jimmy, the shop owner, that I hoped to pull one of these in my box, not thinking it would actually be in there. Too bad it isn't a Harper or a Darvish! It's a pretty freakin sweet card, though.

After that card, I went on about a 15 pack dry spell. Then I pulled this guy:

"Before They Were Great" insert of Roberto Clemente, gold parallel numbered 88 of 99!!! Sweet!

But wait, there's more!

I pulled a pack out of the box and right away knew that it was something out of the ordinary. The weight suggested that there was metal in the pack, so I thought it would be one of those Rookie Cup cards I've been seeing in the blogosphere.

But it wasn't.

This is a black-framed George Brett Rookie Reprint numbered 69 of 199. Pretty awesome card. Helluva of a signature, don't you think? The card is extremely thick - only one other card was in the pack with it.

The box was rounded out by a Rickie Weeks relic...

And two buybacks: a 1960 Gene Woodling (in terrible shape) and a 1975 Don DeMola. Sure, why not.

Can anyone tell me how the buyback program works, by the way???

So, after all that awesomeness, I convinced myself to buy another box of Series 1. I didn't really have the expendable cash, but I just knew I would get something.

And I did. A bunch of crap.

A Joey Votto relic. Not interested.

A terribly cut 1969 Rookie Stars card of Jim Ray and Mike Ferraro.

And a 1965 Bill Plies. Not in bad shape.

However, the very last pack offered this up:

A David Ortiz short print! this is actually the third short print card I have pulled, that I know of - I still need to sort and see if I have any of the "sparkle" short prints - to go along with one of Adam Wainwright and one of Nick Swisher.

So there you have it. My best and worst box. The Romero, Clemente Brett and Ortiz cards are lsited on eBay (have to get some money ready for GQ!), but everything else is up for trade.

Another Random Composition

Today, I'm under the weather. Stress from work and the continuously changing weather has finally caught up to me. I've locked myself in my office with strict instructions to not let anyone in and no calls accepted. I'm being a baby, and I'm okay with that.

In lieu of my illness, today's post is just a collection of shorter posts that aren't really qualified to be a post of their own. So sit back and enjoy.
--------------------
I'm sure everyone has forgotten, but I am hosting a 2014 Gypsy Queen half-case break when the product streets. You get a team of your choice and a randomly assigned team for $40 for five hobby boxes of GQ. Nine people have already signed up - I just need six more! If these remaining slots are filled soon and payment is made, I might be able to swing a deal and get the boxes for less, in which case I would refund everyone their proportionate part. So click on the link above and join now!
--------------------
I've received some cards over the last week that I haven't made mention of. While these definitely deserve their own post, I did what I frequently do: I collated them into my collection before I scanned them in for posting. Greg from Plaschke, Thy Sweater Is Argyle and Marcus from all the way to the backstop were kind enough to send me cards for sets that I was building and for my team sets project. Guys, Thank You, and my sincerest apologies for not having the scans to share!
--------------------
A couple weeks ago, I visited my LCS. Jimmy, the shop owner, insisted that I buy the last box of Tier One he had. I got shafted. Nothing good (for me) in it. He agreed to open his last box of Five Star - and got exactly what he wanted. Here's the video from the break (sorry, I'm an amateur videographer):

--------------------
Over the weekend, I visited my grandparents. My grandmother is responsible for getting me into the hobby, and she still has all of my sets from 1989 through 1993, including the first Upper Deck set (still one of my favorites). She also had some other random goodies:

1991 Desert Storm trading cards produced by Topps. Never one to miss an opportunity to make a couple quarters, Topps produced quite a few of these - I believe there was even an update set after this - and I am fortunate enough to have a complete set (somewhere) as well as this open (but not busted!) box of wax.

Also in that collection of goodies was this:

Official ball of the non-existent 1994 World Series. I vaguely remember getting this ball for my birthday in November, so I'm thinking they were probably printed before the strike ended the season. There is some discoloration near the logo. I'm not sure where that came from, as the ball has been in the box since I got it. My guess is the glue from the box did it.
--------------------
I've always dreamed of becoming wealthy and making a museum devoted to the Rangers in my home. Well, this guy did exactly that, except for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Read the article and then be sure to watch the video. Incredibly impressive.
--------------------
Finally, I end with a couple cards I received in the mail last week. First, a TTM that I sent out a long time ago, but it found its way home:

Mr. Clayton Richard, formerly of the Padres and currently a free agent. I like the signature a lot and I'm very happy that he signed in blue. I don't know where the scratch across his face came from, but beggars can't be choosers so I'll take it.

I also received another redemption from Topps, even though they sent it to my P.O. box instead of my work address (I changed the address more than a month ago after my last shipping debacle with Topps).

2013 Triple Threads Sepia Rooki Auto of Anthony Rendon, numbered 73 of 75. The scan doesn't do this card justice. It is absolutely beautiful. The on-card signature was a surprise - most of the other players' cards featured a sticker auto. Well done, Topps, well done.
--------------------
Well, that's it. Much more information than I intended. If I get feeling better later, I'll have another post on some PC additions.

Up For Grabs!

In an effort to consolidate my collection into something that I enjoy, I have some things to add to my trade bait. This post is light on words and heavy on pictures. Let me know what you want.

First up, I have this Votto box loader and two cabinet cards from 2013 Allen & Ginter. I don't know why I have kept these for so long, I don't like them and I have no place for them. So, take 'em!

Next up, a couple cards from 2013 Tier One. My LCS owner, Jimmy, and I made a trade involving a bunch of cards I didn't want for store credit. He convinced me to open his last box of Tier Once (as part of the deal, he opened his last box of Five Star - I'll get to that in another post).

The third cards was an auto, but it is being sent to one unsuspecting reader. You'll have to wait for it.

So there youhave it. Someone lay claim to these so I can have fewer cards!

Obligatory 2014 Topps S1 Post

First and foremost, I want to thank everyone for their input on my last post. I'm not tired of collecting, per se, because I'm still excited about set building and a couple PC's. However, I am growing a bit tired of a few of my PC's, so I am going to step back and see what happens if I don't mess with them for a while. If I still don't want them after giving them a break, I'll probably move them so that I can get cards I do want. So again, thank you to everyone that gave me some advice.

Now, on to the main event. I busted a couple blasters of 2014 Series 1 Thursday. The first box was awesome - a Harper hot box, if you will. All of these beauties were inside:

Right off the bat, the blaster offered up this Harper rookie reprint patch. I'm not big into the patches - as a matter of fact, I almost always post them on eBay - but I think I'll keep this one. At least for now.

The blaster also had a couple Harper inserts. The "The Future Is Now" insert isn't terribly impressing to me. I'm keeping it because it's Harper. However, the "Upper Class" insert is pretty sweet. The photo is nice - I'm a sucker for the posed photos - and Harper looks like a goofy kid with the hat pulled down and his ears sticking out. Makes me laugh. Glad to add this one to the collection.

The last Harper was this Walmart blue parallel. Always nice to get a Harper parallel...these things always seem to be ridiculously priced on COMC and eBay.

I also added a few other cards to some PC's that I plan on keeping. I'm not going to go into much detail, so just enjoy the pretty pictures!

For the Darvish PC....

And Invader Zim (I'm going to make it stick)...

And lastly, the red sparkle Napbeard in all its glory. How awesome of a card is that?!

For the record, not all of these came from my first two blasters. I bought a couple more later. I am almost done with my set, so any help would be appreciated!
