Update: GQ Group Break, Freedom Cardboard Goodness, A Shady eBay Purchase and a 2014 Heritage Disaster

I recently signed up to be a member of the Freedom Cardboard Forums. It's very similar to blowout, except that the people that are on there aren't jerks. In my first day, I was able to find a Nelson Cruz 2013 WC Classic Tribute auto I wanted for a heck of a deal:
Another member, MetsHotCorner, contacted me and sent me a 2012 Triple Threads Nelson Cruz base parallel (scan coming later) for no reason other than I am a Cruz collector. I am very much a fan of Freedom Cardboard.

On March 1, I purchased a card I needed for 2013 Triple Threads Nelson Cruz project (a Beltre/Cruz/Andrus triple relic numbered to 36). When I clicked on the "Track Package" link on eBay, it always said "Electronic shipping info received." I e-mailed the seller numerous times asking her to make sure that she dropped the package off at the post office. She claimed she did and blamed the delay on the weather (I bought another card the same day from a seller in Chicago and it got to me in 4 days). After two and a half weeks, of getting the same tracking message (which usually means the seller has only printed a shipping label), I e-mailed the seller once again on Friday, March 14, and asked to have my money refunded. The seller obliged.
Then a funny thing happened. This arrived in my mailbox:
I went back to my eBay page and checked the tracking info. The card was finally accepted at the local post office the same night I requested a refund (at 11 p.m.). The card made its way from Chicago to Mineral Wells in three days.
I decided to send the seller the money she refunded to me, though I wish I wouldn't have. I know that the lady just forgot to drop it off at the post office. Oh well.

Last week, my LCS owner called and asked what I had in terms of singles that I would be willing to sell him as he was looking to grab some to sell in his shop. So, this past Friday, I took him everything I have, including set dupes and an assortment of other cards I thought about collecting but changed my mind on.
He offered me cash or a box of 2014 Heritage, and seeing as I plan to build that set, I took the cards. I opened them in the shop, and then neatly placed them back in the box. I chatted for a few more minutes and then left. On the way out, i dropped the box and cards...went...EVERYWHERE. It was a disaster. Roughly half the cards were damaged. It was sickening.
Moral of the story, don't be a dumbass. Like me.

Monster Mail Day
My mailbox had some serious PC cardboard in it today. If you added up all the numbers from the serial numbers, you would come up with the number "4." Let me tell you about the cards.
A couple weeks ago, William from foul bunt shot me a message on Facebook to let me know that one of the regulars at the LCS he frequents had asked him if he was interested in a Triple Threads card that featured three Rangers. He promptly put her in touch with me. After a few back-and-forth "What Would It Take" e-mails, we came to an agreement. The card at the center of it all:
Yesterday, I featured the sapphire version of this card, numbered 2 of 3, and said it was beautiful. It doesn't hold a candle to this beauty. Behold, the ruby parallel, numbered 1 of 1, with three incredible patches. The Andrus patch is from the 2011 World Series, while the Beltre and Cruz patches are from either the team name, number or nameplate.
Absolutely stunning.
But wait, there is another 1 of 1 to share!
Saturday, I stopped by my LCS, Hometown Sports, to see the owner Jimmy. I hadn't visited him in what felt like an eternity, so it was a welcome visit. He was down to one box of 2013 Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects, so I bought it. I pulled an orange auto parallel of Cardinals pitcher Marco Gonzalez. I put it on eBay for $125 BIN and it sold within minutes.
With the money I had, I was able to buy this beauty:
The Nelson Cruz Jumbo Unity Reli ruby parallel, numbered 1 of 1. The patch - upside down, unfortunately - is from the 2012 season celebrating the Rangers 40 years in Arlington.
The seller had this card listed for months at $100 BIN or best offer. I shot him an absolute lowball number, expecting him to come back with something much, much higher. Surprisingly, he accepted the offer.
So there it is, two one-of-ones for my 2013 Triple Threads Nelson Cruz Project. So awesome!

An eBay Lesson Learned
First, thanks to PATP and Bru, there are only TWO spots left in the 2014 GQ Half-Case Break! Sign up now!
Now on to the important part of my post. As you may have noticed, I've updated the right-side toolbar on my page. At the very top is an image titled "The Nelson Cruz Project." If you click on it, it leads you to my page showing my attempt to collect the 2013 Triple Threads Nelson Cruz rainbow (a daunting task, I might add).
So, I set a new watch term on eBay. Soon after, this pops up:
That is the sapphire version of the Beltre/Cruz/Anrus card, numbered 2 of 3, with the Cruz swatch having three beautiful colors. Seeing as I would need a copy of this card, I decided to bid.
The final bidding stopped at about $26, with me being proclaimed the winner.
My celebration was short lived. The seller decided to set a reserve price. What the reserve price was, I don't know, but it was more than I agreed to pay via auction.
I was devastated. The card was beautiful...I mean, look at it and tell me it isn't the cardboard equivalent of Kate Upton.
Go ahead, I'll wait.
I pouted for a couple of days. Then I got another alert: the card had been re-listed, this time with no reserve. the opening bid, however, was set at $19.99. For six days, I watched the card as no one made a bid. Then, just as the auction was about to end Saturday, I put in a max bid upwards of $37 - I didn't want to lose it - and prayed I would be victorious.
The auction ended with me being the only bidder, I picked the card up for $20, six dollars less than what I bid the first time.
So here's the lesson:
DON'T BE A JERK AND PUT RESERVES ON YOUR AUCTIONS.
You may end up having to settle for less.
On a side note, Happy 311 Day! (I don't know if that's a real thing. we're going to go with it.)

My Weekend Was LAME
This weekend, I decided to visit my first card show in 20+ years. It was held in Plano, Texas (I heard about it through Sports Collector Daily - it was put on by editor Rich Klein). I was not impressed.
To be fair, this was the first attempt at hosting a show for Klein, and the money raised through table and raffle ticket sales was to be used by his temple's men's club. So, with all of that in mind, he gets a pass.
The show was advertised as running from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and was to feature 20 tables. The location is about two hours from my house, so I stayed with a cousin the night before because he lives 30 minutes away. I showed up at 9 a.m., paid my !4 admission fee and donated another $9 and walked in.
I was immediately disappointed. Close to half of the vendors were either not there or still in the process of setting up. As a person that it highly frustrated by tardiness, I was immediately bothered. My primary goal was to submit some of my cards to Beckett for grading (I'm finally moving toward my goal of getting my PC's graded), but the Beckett guys were still setting up.
So I decided to take an initial walk around the floor to see who had what and then formulate a plan of attack. For the tables that were set up, few had anything I was interested in. Some tables had nice cards; unfortunately, the prices were astronomical. Other tables had mostly football cards, which I don't collect. One table was solely vintage sports magazines. That's pretty cool, but not something I am interested in. I continued to scan all of the tables, but stopped when I noticed the Beckett table was up and running.
I went and chatted with the guys from Beckett, then filled out my paperwork to have my cards graded. Five cards and $60 later, my cards were packaged to be graded. I should get them back in four weeks. Hooray!
When I was finished there, I was tempted to just leave. However, I did spot a table that had a "$3 Hit" box, so I went back and scoped it out. After finding a couple cards that I could send in trades, I found a few cards for myself. I asked the vendor if he would take $10 for the five cards, to which he replied he would be more than happy to keep them if I didn't want to pay full price. I gave him $15 and walked out.
In all, I saw only one vendor who had anything remotely close to a dime box, and it was a 50-cent box. I briefly looked through it, but it seemed to mostly be football. I only recall one table that had any autographed balls or memorabilia for sale, and not a single table offered boxes for sale. There were no tables that had supplies for sale, either.
In all, I didn't have a great experience. I don't know that I'll go to any more shows again any time soon. I seem to have better luck trading with y'all.

A Post Long Overdue
This post should have been up a long time ago. I've received some cards froma few trades that I never posted about, and I am truly sorry. So, without further ado, let's take a look.

First, I completed a trade with Kalib from Cubs Cardboard (I swear, the blogosphere consists mainly of Cubs and Dodgers bloggers!). If you aren't following him, you should be! I sent him a few cards I pulled over Christmas, and in return, Kalib sent me these beauties:
That a short print photo variation of Darvish from 2012 Update. I'm a fan. Kalib also sent this sweet blue border auto of Rangers minor leaguer Ben Rowan. He had a down season last year, but if he can get it back together, he should be one of our better pitching prospects in the future. Thanks again Kalib!

A little while back, I sent out some Topps Chrome refractors to people that claimed them. Night Owl claimed the Dodgers, so I sent them his way with no expectation of anything in return. However, last week I received a package:
The back of the card cracks me up. The poor guy is being mocked on his own card.

Also sending cards my way was Douglas of Sportscards from the Dollar Store. I sent him some Bowman cards that he needed. In return, I received a bonus package with this note:
I don't know how you would react, but my anticipation shot through the roof. The cards on the outside were these two:
But sandwiched in the middle was this guy:
A certified auto of righty Will Lamb, currently pitching for Hickory. Awesome card! This is my first pro debut card!

I also received an eBay package today. I mentioned that I liked the 2013 All Star Stitches cards. Well, here's the newest addition:
The Nelson Cruz gold edition, numbered 43 of 50. It's a beaut, right?

Lastly, Night Owl mention today that he received some Mystery Mail. Well, I have, too, on a couple occasions. First, I received these four cards in a PWE with no return address and no note:
Earlier this week, I received these cards (along with some 2014 S1) in a package mailed by Matthew Major of Fairfax, Virginia:
I checked my e-mail, and for the life of me I can't find Matthew anywhere.
So, if you sent me either of these packages, please come forward so I can properly say Thank You!

Mr. Owl also included this Peter Broberg card. I've never heard of this particular card line - my knowledge of vintage cardboard is severely lacking - but I do know that I like the tallboy style.
